Drop Coverage for the Winter??

This is a question that I am sure many riders consider as they park their bike in the garage for the winter. It sounds reasonable that someone wouldnt want to pay for coverage for 4-5 months, however this could be a costly assumption for a few reasons:

  1. There is absolutely NO COVERAGE for your cycle under your homeowners policy even if it is parked in your garage. Theft and fire are still real risks to your ride.
  2. If we get a nice 75 degree day in the winter and you decide to head out for a ride, you want to be sure your policy is active
  3. You will pay more when you go to buy another policy in the spring with having a lapse in coverage.
  4. Your company may report your cancellation to your state department of motor vehicles who will then start proceedings to suspend your registration unless you can provide new proof of insurance.
In years past many companies had a "lay-up" provision to suspend liabillity coverage, but most now price their policies figuring most people have very limited riding in the winter.

How is your motorcycle valued at time of loss ?

There are a few types of valuation that insurance policies use. These are:

Actual Cash Value (ACV)- also known as market value, is the standard that insurance companies arguably prefer when reimbursing policyholders for their losses. Actual cash value is equal to the replacement cost minus any depreciation (ACV = replacement cost - depreciation). It represents the dollar amount you could expect to receive for the item if you sold it in the marketplace. The insurance company determines the depreciation based on a combination of objective criteria (using a formula that takes into account the category and age of the property) and subjective assessment (the insurance adjuster's visual observations of the property or a photograph of it). In the case of custom motorcycles this objective criteria is harder to determine and an independent appraisal may help

Replacement Cost Value
(RC)- this is the cost to replace with new. This is available from some companies for standard manufacturers (Harley, Yamaha, Honda, etc) if you are the original titleholder and only lasts for a period of a few (2-3)years. As some manufactured customs become more mainstream they may be added by insurance companies.

Stated Value- this term can be easily confused with "agreed value". Stated value means that the policy will pay the actual cash value not to exceed the amount stated on the declarations page.

Agreed Value - agreed value is an amount agreed upon by the insurance company that it will pay in event of a total loss. This is available on very few auto policies and no motorcycle policies except those for antique motorcycles that we are aware of. You will pay more for this type of coverage than ACV or even RC.

As an informed insurance buyer, if you are concerned with this than you should ask which type is available as part of your buying process. The insurance policy is a contract and you should insist on having it in writing. The section of the insurance policy that deals with this is titled "Loss Settlement"

Why Uninsured/Undersinsured Motorist Coverage?

Unfortunately there are many drivers on the roads carrying either no insurance(in violation of financial responsibility laws) or having state minimum coverages (which are inadequate in many cases). If you are injured by one of these irresponsible drivers, uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage will provide you with coverage for your injuries.

You can purchase this coverage up to the liability limits on your policy, and we certainly urge you to do so.

You can also elect to "stack" this coverage. Stacking provides coverage times the number of motorcycles you own and insure. For example, if you have stacked limits of $100,000/$300,000 with 2 motorcycles, your coverage is increased to $200,000/$600,000.

Since most motorcyclists somehow magically turn "invisible" to other vehicles, this coverage is even more important for bikers than for autos.

Don't sacrifice coverage to save a few dollars without even considering it! Email me at andy@rafraser.com for more info or see http://www.rafraser.com/recreational.php for a FREE QUOTE.

Good news for Pennsylvania riders!

Foremost Insurance just took a nice rate DECREASE. Statewide its about 5% but in certain localities it can be about 25% lower. Good news for all motorcyclists, especially owners of custom bikes.
